Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering

Dr. Hongyan Ma is currently a Kummer Impact Professor, Francisco Benavides Scholar, and Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering at Missouri S&T. He joined Missouri S&T in October 2015 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering and granted tenure in September 2021. Before joining Missouri S&T, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Dr. Ma is currently directing the Laboratory of Future Cements and Carbon-negative Initiatives (FuCCI) at Missouri S&T, and leading major research projects funded by National Science Foundation, Department of Energy (ARPA-E, FECM, etc.), Department of Defense, Department of Transportation, industry, and private foundations. He is a member of American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the American Ceramic Society (ACerS), and serving as an editorial board member for three journals, grant evaluator for the national science foundations of four countries, and reviewer for more than 50 reputable journals.

Research Interests:

Future cements (cement efficiency enhancing strategies, novel supplementary cementitious materials, and alternative cements); solid waste upcycling; massive CO2 capture, utilization, and mineralization; thermal energy storage and micro-grid integration; materials characterization; multi-scale modeling; concrete durability; NDT and sensing; nano- and biological technologies in construction; and carbon-negative recovery of critical minerals (e.g., Ni, Co, Li, and Cu).
